Big Day for Van Slyke as Pirates Down White Sox, 7-4
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Chicago White Sox, 7-4, with first baseman Andy Van Slyke playing a big role. Van Slyke was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once for the Pirates in the win. Bruce Hurst got the win, improving to 5-3. He held the White Sox to 3 earned runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, while striking out 7 and walking 0. The win puts the Pirates at 33-29, while the White Sox drop to 19-43.
With Pittsburgh leading 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Van Slyke hit a sinker from LaMarr Hoyt for a 3-run home run. It was his 15th home run of the season and put the Pirates ahead, 5-0.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Van Slyke told the Pittsburgh Bulletin. "It's as simple as that."
