Pirates Need Extras to Top Twins
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a win at Metrodome, knocking off the Minnesota Twins, 7-5. Starting pitcher Kevin Appier, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. Pittsburgh reliever Bryan Harvey was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Jerry Spradlin took the loss. The Pirates are now 35-26, while the Twins fall to 27-35.
Pittsburgh left fielder Craig Shipley had a key at-bat for the Pirates in the top of the 13th inning. Facing Minnesota pitcher Jerry Spradlin, Shipley hit a 2-run home run to make the score 7-5, Pittsburgh. For the day, he went 1-7 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
In postgame comments, Appier said, "I think we gave the fans their money's worth."
