Spiders Solve Cardinals, 5-2
|
The Cleveland Spiders got a strong performance from pitcher Sterling Hitchcock, who stymied the St. Louis offense en route to a 5-2 win at League Park. The winning pitcher was Hitchcock, now 6-4. He tossed 6.1 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 6 and fanning 7. The Spiders now own a record of 34-31.
Howard Johnson put Cleveland in front, 5-1, when he hit a 2-run home run off Chris Hammond in the bottom of the fifth. It was his 15th home run of the season.
"You've got to ride the highs and the lows in baseball in order to succeed," Hitchcock told the Cleveland News. "Right now I'm feeling good, but that don't mean squat for tomorrow."
