Pilots Win Thriller, 3-2
|
The Washington Senators got a superb performance from pitcher Andy Pettitte, but the Seattle Pilots still won the game, 3-2. Pettitte was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball. The win was Derek Lilliquist's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Mark Wohlers took the loss for Washington. The Pilots saw their record improve to 34-32.
Tied up with the Senators in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Pilots got a boost from catcher Joe Girardi. With a runner on 1st, Girardi saw a 0-2 fastball from Dan Plesac and hit a run-scoring double to break the stalemate and put Seattle on top, 3-2.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said Washington skipper Alexander Cumana, "and it cost us."
