Oakland right-hander Todd Van Poppel made an effective start against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 6-4 win. Oakland goes to 28-41, Los Angeles to 36-34.

The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Greg Vaughn came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Facing Los Angeles pitcher Bill Wilkinson, he hit a full count fastball for a 2-run home run. It was a game-changer, putting Oakland on top, 6-4.

"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Van Poppel. "Successful pitchers do it."
