Victory Pushes Pirates Record to 38-33
|
Pittsburgh Pirates starter Kevin Appier pitched a strong game against the Boston Red Sox at Three Rivers Stadium, leading the Pirates to a 7-4 win. Appier, now 8-4, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 7, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs. Pittsburgh's record now stands at 38-33, placing them second in the Federal League East Division.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Pirates had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fourth, when left fielder Craig Shipley hit a 2-run single. The single came off Tom Gordon and made the score 3-1, Pirates. Shipley was 1-2 with a hit by pitch, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Shipley said.
