Royals Edge Pirates, 3-2
|
The Royals had to overcome a fine performance from Pittsburgh pitcher Doug Drabek to grab a 3-2 win at Three Rivers Stadium. Drabek allowed no earned runs over 7.1 innings. Kansas City reliever Mike Stanton was the winner. His record is now 3-1. Brian Holton took the loss. Kansas City has an impressive 55-19 record.
Late-game drama came in the top of the 12th inning. With no one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, the batter, Jeff Conine, hit a single. It helped Kansas City seize the win.
Pittsburgh manager Stephen Ginter said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
