Senators Lose, 3-1, at Jack Murphy Stadium
|
San Diego starter Ismael Valdez pitched effectively against the Washington Senators at Jack Murphy Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a 3-1 win. Valdez went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 9. His record improves to 6-4. Ramon Pena was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 1 of 1 save opportunities.
In the bottom of the first, San Diego catcher Jerry Willard had a productive at-bat. With a runner on 2nd and no one out, Willard stroked a 2-run home run to right-center. It made the score 2-0, San Diego. For the game, he was 1-3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"You score one run, you're not going to win," said Washington skipper Alexander Cumana. "You can have three Koufaxes and three Drysdales, you're still not going to win."
The Padres move to 34-41 with the win, while the Senators drop to 37-36.
