Marlins Sneak Past Creams, 5-4
|
Florida beat Milwaukee at Joe Robbie Stadium, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Al Leiter, who earned player of the game honors. Paul Shuey picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 3-1. Jeff Calhoun was tagged with the loss. The Marlins, now 48-26, have won 5 in a row.
Tied up with the Creams in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Marlins got a boost from first baseman Richie Sexson. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Sexson saw a 2-1 fastball from Wally Whitehurst and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put Florida on top, 5-4.
"This is a very good team," said Leiter. "We have the chance to do something special."
