Cubs Prevail, 2-1, Over New York
|
The rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Chicago fans at Wrigley Field.
Eric King never let New York get something going. The Chicago right-hander commanded his fastball in pitching the Cubs to a 2-1 win. King, the winner, moves to 8-5. He threw 5 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 1 walk. Frank DiPino notched his 21st save in 26 chances.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when first baseman Mike Piazza, who won the Most Valuable Player in 1995, hit a run-scoring double. The Cubs went on to win.
"If you ever get this game figured out," said New York manager Tigerr Wolfe, "let me know."
Chicago is now 38-36.
