Atlanta Decked by Gonzalez, Cubs
|
With left fielder Luis Gonzalez leading the charge, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves, 11-3, at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Gonzalez, who is tied for 4th in the FL in extra base hits with 44, went 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Randy Tomlin was the winner. Over 9 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, with 6 walks and 6 strikeouts. Chicago is 43-34 and Atlanta, with the loss, 40-38.
The Braves had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Cubs going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 29-year old first baseman Mark Grace came to the plate. Grace hit a run-scoring triple on a 2-2 fastball from Atlanta hurler Melido Perez. It was Grace's 3rd triple of the year.
"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Gonzalez.
