Big Game from Mondesi Not Enough, Expos Lose
Montreal right fielder Raul Mondesi was sensational. He hit 3 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored three times, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. San Diego beat the Expos, 9-6. Mondesi was named the player of the game despite the loss. Tim Crews picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Ken Howell was tagged with the loss. The 5th-place Padres raised their record to 36-43.

The Padres got a lift from left fielder Mike Kingery, who in the top of the ninth stroked a 2-2 fastball into left-center for a bases-clearing double. It was his 10th double of the season and put the Padres ahead, 9-6.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Kingery.
