New York Wins, Nevin drives in 5 runs
|
In a high-scoring game between New York and Detroit, third baseman Phil Nevin was a difference-maker. The 26-year-old earned player of the game honors in the 10-8 New York win. He was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5. Darren Holmes notched his 2nd save in 2 chances. The Mets saw their record improve to 44-38.
With New York leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Nevin hit a fastball from Vaughn Eshelman for a grand slam home run. It was his 15th home run of the season and put the Mets ahead, 5-0.
"We came out aggressive," said Mets manager Michael Kritikos. "We came out swinging the bats."
