Royals Clip Twins, 6-5
|
The Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins, 6-5, at Royals Stadium. Jim Thome was recognized as player of the game for his performance. He went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. The two-time All-Star was a menace to Minnesota all day. Kevin Tapani, the winner, improved to 10-4. He held the Twins to 4 earned runs on 5 hits over 8 innings, while striking out 6 and walking 3. Kansas City is now 64-20, 16½ games up in the Federal League Central Division.
The Royals got a big at-bat from catcher Rick Wilkins. For the game, Wilkins went 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded, he stroked a grand slam home run. His 9th home run of the season gave Kansas City a 6-3 lead.
"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Thome said.
