Yankees Turn Back Twins, 6-4
|
The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-4, at Metrodome. Don Mattingly was named player of the game for New York. His 3 hits included 2 singles and 1 double, in addition to the 1 run he scored and 2 he knocked in. The win was Calvin Schiraldi's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Pat Combs took the loss for Minnesota. Andy Ashby, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save.
New York used the timely hitting of Kelly Gruber to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Yankees on top, 6-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"It was sure nice to get the win but there's a lot of baseball left," Mattingly after the game.
