The Cincinnati Reds grabbed a 11-5 win over the Cleveland Spiders at Riverfront Stadium. Cincinnati first baseman Tino Martinez was 2-4 with 2 home runs, while adding 7 RBI and scoring twice to earn player of the game honors. Jose Rijo, who went 8 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 5 runs on 8 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 5. His record now stands at 10-2. Cincinnati leads the Federal League East Division by 6 games.

Eric Davis had a big 2-run single for the Reds in the bottom of the third inning. With Cincinnati leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a knuckleball from Tim Wakefield and stroked the single to left. It was his 85th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Reds ahead, 3-0.
