Sosa Goes Long 3 Times
Sunday, April 23rd, 1995
Sammy Sosa of the Mets won the battle against Washington pitching, but lost the war. He hit three out of the park at Shea Stadium, got his name in the league record book, but New York came up short in the win column, losing to the Senators 7-6. The New York right fielder was red-hot, the ball just exploded off his bat all day long.
"I don't try to hit homers," he said. "I try to go out there and have good at-bats. If I put a good swing on the ball, then it is going to go out of the park. I didn't try to hit the first one or the second one or the third one. I just try to have good at-bats."
For the game he went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Where does he rank this day in his career? "It's up there," Sosa said. "I'll put it up there in the upper echelon, despite the loss."
Sammy Sosa hit a solo-shot off Carlos Perez in the 2nd, struck out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Carlos Perez in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Lee Smith in the 8th.
In his season totals Sosa has 12 home runs and a .228 batting average.
