Piazza Powers 3 HR Against St. Louis
Monday, June 30th, 1997
Some days you can't have it all, as Chicago Cubs first baseman Mike Piazza discovered when he cracked three homers against the St. Louis Cardinals today, and still lost.
"I have mixed emotions about this game," he said. "It's great to hit three homers, but it's hard to be happy when you lose the game."
The 28-year-old got his name in the league record books, but the Cardinals walked away with the 10-5 triumph at Busch Stadium. Piazza finished the day with 3 hits in 4 at-bats and 4 RBIs.
"I got three balls to hit and nailed all three of them," he said in the postgame interview.
Mike Piazza hit a solo-shot off Jeff Pico in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Jeff Pico in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Mariano Rivera in the 8th.
On the year Piazza has hit .265 with 15 home runs, 45 RBIs and scored 51 runs.
