Chicago Trades Hrbek for Washington's Mattingly
Wednesday, July 30th, 1997
It took some time to iron out the details, but the Cubs and Senators have agreed to a swap. Washington will get 28-year-old RHP Julio Valera, 34-year-old 3B Craig Shipley and 37-year-old minor league 1B Kent Hrbek with Chicago receiving 36-year-old minor league 1B Don Mattingly and 34-year-old LHP Scott Ruskin in return. A source close to the trade talks said the two clubs were initially looking to make a bigger deal, but discussions broke off late last night. The two sides reconvened early today and eventually settled on this deal.

Hrbek is batting .187 with 7 home runs and 23 RBIs this season.

Mattingly is swinging at a .265 pace on the year with 9 home runs, 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He has played in 55 games.
