Valdez Sharp, Whitewashes Pilots
Thursday, September 11th, 1997
Ismael Valdez of the San Diego Padres spun his magic on the Seattle Pilots today. He blanked them 8-0 on 4 hits, registering 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.
"The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Valdez said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down."
Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, San Diego skipper Matt Dodds said the team "got solid pitching, good defense and took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations."
"Ismael pitched really well but this was a solid performance by everyone," he said.
Valdez has made 31 starts so far this year and put up a 14-15 won-lost record with a 3.87 ERA. In 220.2 innings he has allowed 195 hits, walked 51 and struck out 214.
