League Gets Last Word, Suspends Surhoff 2 Games
Tuesday, September 16th, 1997
New York Mets catcher B.J. Surhoff was suspended 2 games by the league commissioner today, a day after arguing his ejection during a game against the Seattle Pilots.
"I think the 2 games are a little harsh," Surhoff said.
He was ejected by plate umpire for arguing balls and strikes.
After his ejection, Surhoff went into the dugout, then came back on the field, argued with the umpire and had to be restrained by coaches and teammates. The suspension was issued for "unbecoming conduct and returning to the field of play after being dismissed."
Currently Surhoff is batting .229 with 9 home runs, 42 RBIs and 55 runs scored.
