Gooden Claims All-Time Record for Wins
Wednesday, September 24th, 1997
241, 241. The chant continued as long as Dwight Gooden was on the mound, the anxious crowd at Memorial Stadium calling out the number that would make Dwight Gooden the number one hurler in career wins.

When the last out of the game was made and the win officially recorded for Gooden, the crowd went into a celebratory frenzy honoring the historic achievement. The great star of the Baltimore Orioles Gooden had just broken the record of pitching immortal Marty Bystrom.

"It's hard enough just to win a single baseball game, and it really gets hard to win a milestone game," the new record holder told reporters. "This one was especially tough since it had a lot of pressure and media coverage associated with it. It's great to finally do it and I thank everybody who had anything to do with each and every one of those 241 victories."

So far this year Gooden has made 32 starts, tossed 228.1 innings, struck out 242 batters and walked 80. His record is 13-11 with a 2.68 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .200 batting average.
