The Office of the Commissioner of the Doubleday Baseball League today announced that the Florida Marlins have officially clinched a playoff berth and secured the Federal League East Division Championship for the 1996 season.

This marks the first division title for the franchise since 1989 and the 13th playoff appearance overall since the league’s inception in 1976. It also represents the club’s second consecutive postseason berth, following last year’s appearance as a Wild Card team.

The organization underwent a major transition prior to the 1996 season, relocating and rebranding from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Florida Marlins. In their first season under the new identity, the Marlins delivered an impressive campaign, culminating in their first division championship in seven years.

With the division secured, Florida will enter the postseason representing the Federal League East Division, aiming to build on their recent momentum and make a deep playoff run.
