The Doubleday Baseball League is proud to announce the Players of the Week for the period ending May 12, 1996.
United League – Takehiro Ishii (New York Mets)
Veteran pitcher Takehiro Ishii showed that experience still counts, earning the United League Player of the Week Award. The 31-year-old right-hander went 2–0 across two starts, delivering 15 innings with a 0.60 ERA. Ishii struck out 16 hitters while allowing only 5 walks, controlling the game with poise. For the season, Ishii has compiled a 5–3 record with a 2.29 ERA, striking out 58 batters in 55 innings.
Federal League – Chipper Jones (Texas Rangers)
On the offensive side, Chipper Jones of the Texas Rangers powered his way to the Federal League Player of the Week honor. The 24-year-old third baseman was nearly unstoppable at the plate, hitting .522 (12-for-23) with 6 home runs, 12 RBIs, and 11 runs scored over the week. Jones continues to shine in 1996, carrying a .295 batting average with 11 home runs, 32 RBIs, and a .375 on-base percentage.
These performances highlight the exceptional talent across both leagues as the season begins to take shape.
