The leagues have announced their Players of the Week, honoring a veteran rediscovering his old swing and a rookie announcing his arrival in a big way.
In the United League, Don Mattingly of Washington turned back the clock to claim Player of the Week honors. At 36, Mattingly recaptured some of the magic that defined his career, torching UL pitching with 11 hits in 20 at-bats, 5 home runs, and 10 RBIs.
“I’ve been playing since I was a kid,” Mattingly told reporters, “but you’re never too old to feel the thrill of success.”
On the season, Mattingly is batting .289 with a .311 on-base percentage, totaling 33 hits, 7 home runs, and 18 RBIs.
Over in the Federal League, Scott Spiezio of Cincinnati made a statement with a breakout week that earned him Player of the Week honors. The 24-year-old rookie first baseman hit .435 (10-for-23), blasting 3 home runs and driving in 10 runs, quickly gaining the attention of pitchers around the league.
For the year, Spiezio is batting .282 with 8 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 21 runs scored.
Two leagues, two different stages of a career — and two performances that stood above the rest last week.
