Cardinals Trip Yankees, 5-4
St. Louis withstood an impressive performance by New York first baseman Don Mattingly to defeat the Yankees, 5-4, at Yankee Stadium. Mattingly was 3-4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Joe Johnson got credit for the win, improving to 9-6. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 8 innings. The Cardinals have now won 5 straight.

The Cardinals got an important contribution from center fielder Jim Edmonds, who in the top of the eighth knocked a 1-0 fastball into right for a solo home run. It was his 13th home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 4-1.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Edmonds.
