The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Boston Red Sox, 9-2, in Federal League action at Fenway Park, with Cincinnati right fielder Bernie Williams named player of the game. David Wells, the winner, improved to 4-3. He held the Red Sox to 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 5 and walking 6. Arthur Rhodes notched his 1st save in 2 chances.

In the top of the first, Williams pounced on a 2-2 fastball from Pete Harnisch and hit a 2-run home run. It put Cincinnati on top, 2-0.
