The Washington Senators topped the Detroit Tigers, 5-3, in United League action at RFK Stadium. The player of the game was Washington pitcher and New Brighton, Minnesota native John Burkett. Burkett went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. His record improves to 8-4. The Senators bumped their record to 63-49 with this latest triumph.
A decisive at-bat came in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners on 1st and 3rd, the batter, Pat F. Kelly, hit a sacrifice fly. It made the score 4-3, Washington, and helped them go on to win.
"I felt good up there," said Kelly. "I saw the ball well."
