The Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4, at Busch Stadium. Cincinnati second baseman Fernando Vina earned player of the game honors. He collected 1 single and 2 doubles, while driving in 1 runs. Cincinnati starter Joey Hamilton was credited with the win after throwing 129 pitches over 8 innings. His record now stands at 17-6. Todd Worrell earned his 34th save in 40 chances.
Matt Stairs had a big 2-run home run for the Reds in the top of the fifth inning. With Cincinnati leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a cutter from Miguel Batista and stroked the home run to right. It was his 21st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Reds ahead, 3-0.
"Feels good to get the job done," Vina said after the game.
