The first-place Cincinnati Reds welcomed Boston to Riverfront Stadium.

The Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Red Sox, 8-5, at Riverfront Stadium. Cincinnati designated hitter Matt Stairs earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He was 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The last-place Red Sox have lost 4 straight games.

The Reds beat the Red Sox with some clutch hitting. The double by Eric Davis in the bottom of the first is a good example. With two down, Davis gave his team the lead, 2-0, when he came through with the big hit.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Davis told the Cincinnati Daily.
