Multi-HR Day for Gates as Twins Overpower Cardinals, 5-3
|
The Minnesota Twins stopped the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3, behind an impressive performance from Brent Gates. The 25-year old second baseman made life miserable for St. Louis pitching. He went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Pat Combs was the winner. Over 7.2 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Rob Dibble was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 33 of 37 save opportunities.
The Twins got a big at-bat from right fielder Larry Walker. For the game, Walker went 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the first, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 24th home run of the season gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
Walker said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
The Twins go to 62-72, putting them 5th in the Federal League Central Division.
