Rangers Get Past Minnesota for 6-5 Win
|
Texas beat Minnesota at Metrodome, escaping with a 6-5 win. The win in large part was due to third baseman Chipper Jones, who earned player of the game honors. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Bob Ojeda, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 3 runs on 7 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4. His record now stands at 9-11. Jeff Calhoun, credited with the save, is now 5 for 7 in save opportunities.
Jones had a game-changing single in the top of the eighth. On a 1-2 fastball from Rob Dibble, he banged a run-scoring single to right, giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead. It was the 167th hit of the year for Jones.
"If it's down the middle," said Jones, "you might as well hit it."
Texas has now won 3 in a row.
