Stag Come Back Late to Top Missions
San Antonio left fielder Eric Owens was sensational. He was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Portland beat the Missions, 9-7. Owens was named the player of the game despite the loss. Portland reliever Mike Mohler picked up the win to move to 2-0. Bob Scanlan suffered the loss. The Missions, at 5-12, have stumbled out of the gate.

The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Mike Mordecai came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing San Antonio pitcher Terry Mathews, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Portland on top, 8-7.

Mordecai said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
