The inspired effort of Orlando third baseman Jose Valentin was not enough to prevent a 12-11 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Valentin belted 2 home runs, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. The Devil Rays fall to 12-14 and continue their wobbly start to the 1997 season.

The Reds were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Jose Offerman turned a 2-2 fastball from Xavier Hernandez into a 2-run single. The walk-off single sent a roar through the crowd and gave Cincinnati a thrilling 12-11 win.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Offerman said after the game.
