Tigers Continue Skid Thanks to Sheffield, Mets
|
The New York Mets beat the Detroit Tigers, 9-5, at Shea Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of shortstop Gary Sheffield, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. Frank Castillo, the winner, improved to 4-3. He held the Tigers to 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, while striking out 11 and walking 2. Earning his 2nd save for New York was Willie Blair.
With New York leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Sheffield hit a fastball from Ramon J. Martinez for a grand slam home run. It was his 8th home run of the season and put the Mets ahead, 5-0.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Sheffield told the New York Today.
The 5th-place Tigers have lost 7 consecutive games.
