Late Rally by Royals Seals 9th Straight Win
|
Kansas City beat Atlanta at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, escaping with a 4-3 win. The win in large part was due to designated hitter Jim Thome, who earned player of the game honors. He belted 2 home runs. The winner was Kansas City reliever Kevin Rogers, now 2-0. The loser was Marvin Freeman. Mike Stanton converted his 19th save in 22 tries.
Kansas City needed the clutch hitting of Orlando Merced to notch the win. The right fielder hammered a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Royals on top, 3-2. For the game, Merced had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"The wins are coming in bunches right now," said Merced. "We'll enjoy it while it lasts."
The wins continue to add up for Kansas City, with the latest making it 9 in a row.
