Cardinals Need Extras to Top Red Sox
|
Boston got a terrific performance from designated hitter Henry L. Rodriguez, but it wasn't enough to beat the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis won the Busch Stadium contest, 6-5. Rodriguez was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He was 2-5 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. The win leaves St. Louis with a record of 4-5.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when St. Louis center fielder Jim Edmonds, facing Scott Erickson, had a run-scoring ground out. It gave the Cardinals the 6-5 win.
"We didn't go down without a fight," said Boston manager Brett Williams.
