Expos Take Nail-Biter Over Orioles
|
Montreal beat Baltimore at Olympic Stadium, eking out a 4-3 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Pat Hentgen, who earned player of the game honors. Dave Leiper picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-1. Roger McDowell was tagged with the loss. The Expos have an impressive 49-31 record.
Tied up with the Orioles in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Expos got a boost from left fielder Raul Mondesi. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Mondesi saw a 1-1 fastball from T J Mathews and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put Montreal on top, 4-3.
"I like what I saw today," said Montreal manager David Polakoff, "and I can't wait to get back out there and do it again."
