Martinez Spins 16-K Game
Monday, August 25th, 1997
Everything was working for Pedro Martinez today at Kingdome. He had the perfect delivery. The ball was moving. The circle change was working.

In an unforgettable performance, the 25-year-old Martinez fanned 16 Pilots and sparked the Montreal Expos to a 14-3 victory over Seattle. He left Pilots hitters mumbling and muttering at the plate. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it.

"I don't know if there are many times that I've seen him throw better," said Montreal manager David Polakoff. "His location and command were really something."

In addition to collecting 16 strikeouts over 8.2 innings, Martinez allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in a superlative outing.

"I thought I'd make it easy on the guys today," Martinez said with a smile.

Martinez has a 15-7 season record so far. In 27 starts, he has fanned 323 batters in 197.2 innings with a 2.60 ERA.
