Williams Belts Number 300
Thursday, September 8th, 1994
The crowd roared -- they knew they were seeing history -- and Matt Williams was delighted, too. The 28-year-old Cardinals third baseman was making history with his 300th career homer. The crowd buzzed and roared again when Williams stuck his head out of the dugout for a curtain call.
"Never, as a kid, did I ever think I'd hit even one," he told BNN after hitting No. 300 in a 9-5 victory over Minnesota. Williams went 1-for-4 in the game, had 2 runs batted in, and scored 1 run.
Williams is hitting the ball at a .253 clip over his career. In 1101 games he has delivered 1112 hits, 300 home runs with 804 RBIs and scored 668 times.
